Bariatric Surgery
“The comfort of the human body comes with agility and flexibility of doing things; Change for better”
What are the types of Bariatric surgery?
- Gastric bypass: This procedure is done in two parts, initially, a small stomach pouch is
formed by separating the top of the stomach from the remaining part. Then the first portion of
the small intestine is split from the lower part and brought up to join the newly created small
stomach pouch. The top portion of the diverged small intestine is attached to the remaining
small intestine further below so that the stomach acids and digestive enzymes merge with the
food. - Adjustable gastric band: This involves an inflatable band that is placed around the upper
portion of the stomach that forms a small stomach pouch above the band through adjustment. - Sleeve gastrectomy: This procedure removes approximately 80 percent of the stomach
while the remaining stomach which is a tubular pouch remains. - Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch: It consists of two parts where a smaller
tubular stomach pouch is created by removing a portion of the stomach, and the majority of
the small intestine is bypassed, which is similar to gastric bypass.
What are the advantages of bariatric surgery?
- The procedures produce significant long-term weight loss.
- They restrict the amount of food that can be consumed so that there is not much weight
gain post-procedure. - It creates beneficial changes in the hormones of the gut that reduce the appetite and
gives a feeling of fullness. - The procedures are relatively short with a hospital stay of approximately 2 days with
ancillary other procedures. - A few procedures eventually allow patients to eat near ‘normal’ meals again.
